During the first year of life foals should receive a minimum of four de worming treatments. Their first treatment should be at 2-3 Months of age, with a Benzimidazole drug to ensure efficiency against large roundworms. Second de-worming is recommended just before weaning (approximately six months of age). An extra treatment can be justified before weaning if the time period between the two treatments exceeds 3 months. At weaning a FWEC is recommended to determine whether worm burdens are primarily strangles or large roundworms, to facilitate the right choice of drug class. Third and Fourth FWEC should be considered at about 9 and 12 months of age. Tapeworm tests should be included on one of these later tests.

A faecal egg count reduction test consists of comparing the results of a faecal egg count test conducted before deworming your horse and a second faecal egg count test performed after deworming your horse. Both faecal egg count test results are then inputted into a formula to calculate the faecal egg count reduction result.

The Reduction Test, is a The MORE the MERRIER Test, this gives an overall insight to how dewormers are working.

Each of your horses is unique, but the parasites are the same across your property. To properly interpret fecal egg count reduction results, there should be at least four (preferably six) horses with pretreatment fecal egg counts of 100 EPG or greater. Fewer horses can be used; however, the confidence in the fecal egg count reduction test results diminishes the fewer the number of horses treated.
